Managing Crisis with Management Education

The present COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the world, including the education sector. Across the globe, educational institutes are trying to search the ways to get the teaching-learning continued. During this crisis, one word that is found common is Management. Be it the political leaders, or doctors, or business people, or educators, everyone is trying to manage the crisis. So, that’s where the importance of management education holds its roots. India is a land of guru-shishya paramapara for ages. That’s the principle practiced at The NorthCap University in true sense. Every student gets a hand holding by a mentor. A student enrolled in a management course, learns the fundamentals of managing a business and also managing self. We at NCU focus on students acquiring knowledge and skills in the field of Digital Marketing and Business Analytics to enhance the reach of brands and businesses across cultures, geographies, and demographics and learn to analyze data in order to secure meaningful information necessary for businesses in crafting strategies. The study disciplines range from Marketing Management and Human resources management and Financial Management to Operations Management. Management education focuses on communication skills, ethical conduct, and personality development of an individual, which can help him emerge as a leader. Not only a student learns about managing a business; instead, he/she gets a complete idea about becoming an entrepreneur. Post pandemic period may leave behind a strong wave of recession, with job uncertainties, that’s where an entrepreneur can support the economies and self as well. Management education leads to selfreliance, which is required in the times of crisis and post-crisis as well. It enables individuals to bring innovative ideas into practice, which can reform the world.

Corporate Expectations from MBA Graduates

Sustaining in today’s competitive world has persuaded entrepreneurs and owners to search for the right business management professionals who have the skills and capability of making any business successful.  Recruiters and hiring managers look for candidates who can jump right in on the first day of work and starts helping the company achieve its goals. Today, the employers are looking for MBA graduates who not only have a strong command over technical or conceptual know-how of the business but are also creative leaders, skilled, ethical, and have a strong global mindset. MBA graduates, these days, are required to have extensive knowledge of the corporate world, develop interpersonal skills, organizational behavior, problem-solving skills, communication skills, and other such soft skills that will help them become industry-ready and fetch success in their professional career. However, Skill expectations for MBA graduates depend largely on industry factors.

Employers in the leading sectors identify distinct skills, priorities, and shortcomings.  For example, consulting firms prioritize communication skills as the most important skill compared with financial skills in the finance industry and interpersonal skills in technology companies. Various studies have been conducted to find the employability of MBA students. According to the India Skills report 2019 of AICTE, 36.44% of the MBA talents are readily employable. In contrast,  ASSOCHAM report 2018 states that only 7% of the MBA students are skilled and readily employable in India. Hence, it becomes crucial to identify the factors that make MBA students employable. Financial Times 2018, MBA Skills Gap Survey, found that employers want to hire the candidates who have soft skills coupled with hard skills like  technology, accountancy, marketing,  use of social media, etc. and also team players, able to solve complex problems, can build a network, and can prioritize their time. According to various studies, Knowledge, Skill, and Attitude factors that make MBA employable and are expected from corporate can be listed as:

1.      Willingness to learn

Learning is about wanting to understand new things and picking them up quickly. It also involves taking on new tasks and being able to adapt to change. While working in the corporate world, various times professionals come across certain skills that they are neither aware of nor mastered yet. Under such circumstances, professionals are required to accept their limitations and showcase the willingness to learn new things. This reflects the process of self-improvement and ensures the growth of the team and the company.

2.      Commitment

Organizations require professionals who are loyal and committed as MBA graduates are hired to contribute to the growth of organizations.

3.       Teamwork skills

Teamwork means being able to get along with the people you work with. It involves working together to achieve a shared goal. MBA graduates are expected to serve as a link between the team members working under them and the top management teams of the organization. Thus, during the hiring process, the employers look for great teamwork skills in an MBA graduate since it ensures that the goals and values of the company are being upheld.

4.      Interpersonal skills

MBA graduates are expected to have strong interpersonal skills. Management students with advanced interpersonal skills tend to collaborate well with different groups. Hence, every MBA graduate must develop their interpersonal skills.

5.      Communication skills

Communication means being clear about what you say and what you want to achieve when you talk or write.  Companies expect excellent communication skills from their employees. Those MBA graduates who master the art of effective communication come out as great leaders.

6.      Strategic Planning and Thinking

An MBA must develop a Strategic Planning and Thinking skillset as it helps in professional development. This skill requires innovation and creative thinking that allows analyzing customers, employees, and business and industry trends.

7.      Problem-solving and decision-making skills

Problem-solving and decision-making are important skills for business and life. Problem-solving often involves decision-making, and decision-making is especially important for management and leadership. An MBA program introduces students to all the tools and techniques which they can utilize to solve problems more effectively and make better decisions.

8.      Global Mindset

Studies by the Global Mindset Index has recognized that businesses that are committed to their employees acquiring an international outlook are more likely to achieve their objectives and goals than businesses that don’t. A global mindset involves the ability to work successfully across cultures. The growing interaction among global markets has increased the expectations of the employers, in terms of the skills that are required in an MBA graduate. Now, an MBA aspirant must have a global mindset as it would help them understand the differences among cultures and business practices and they can easily acknowledge the opportunities to learn about the similarities.

9.      Master Technical Know-How

With the extensive dependency of every business on the digital platforms and social media, It has become quite crucial for the MBA students to have extensive knowledge of all technical tools related to their MBA specialization. Technical skill is the ability to carry out a task associated with technical roles such as IT, engineering, mechanics, science or finance. When the students combine the business acumen with highly-sought after tech skills, they develop an advantageous skill set that allows them to design and implement solutions and successfully bridge the gap between technology and business. Moreover, an MBA graduate with knowledge of technology is considered to be a well-rounded decision-maker in the corporate world.

10.   Networking know-how

Networking is making links from people we know to people they know, in an organized way, for a specific purpose. Networking skills are an asset in the business environment, as the ability to connect with people and maintain relationships is instrumental in business.

Student Testimonial - The NorthCap University

The Journey between what I was to what I am, is where the “THE NORTHCAP UNIVERSITY” lies.

I still remember my admission time when I was perplexed among three universities for my graduation in Bachelor of Business Administration. I think most of us face the same dilemma during the time of admission to any college/university. I finally decided to choose NCU over the other universities, and that changed the course of my life.

The first day of my college life began with the nervousness of meeting so many unfamiliar faces. I still remember my first introduction class of every subject in which I found myself different from others as most of my batchmates were from commerce background. And, I was from a science background (Medical);this reason made me feel inferior and I started thinking that I had made the wrong decision of switching my stream because I was in a volatile and uncertain setup, keeping in mind my unfamiliarity with courses. However, as the journey started, I found a different personality in me which was an agile, responsible, and confident person. The undue credit of this transformation that changed the course of my life goes to the faculties and the course curriculum of my Bachelor of Business Administration course at The NorthCap University.
The University designsa Bachelor of Business Administration course in a way that gives a clear picture of the business environment and helps the student to build a strong conceptual base. The subjects that the course include are Principle of Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing Management, Financial Management, and so on. During my Bachelor of Business Administration, I did around 37 courses that really helped me to understand the business in a better way.

The journey at NCU would not be astonishing and useful if I were not taught by the best faculties who know in and out of their subjects. The faculties of NCU helped me at every phase of my three years. They actually acted as the backbone of my success because they believed in me. I think that was the very push which helped me in achieving heights in my life. Whenever I needed their help, I never heard “No” from them. Their guidance and support during the course helped me in transforming myself.

As I look back now, these three years of my life have transformed my character from being a perennial introvert in school days to a confident and independent woman. I could not help but thank my faculties and The NorthCap University for this change.

Psychological Well-being for students during the time of Coronavirus

The current Coronavirus (COVID 19) epidemic has evoked many feelings. Some of us are enjoying the added time with our loved ones, while others are experiencing anxiety over their safety.

● We might feel grief or relief, sadness, nervousness, or optimism. For many of us, if not all, the uncertainty could leave us feeling that we have little control.

● While life is always uncertain, unpredictable, and uncontrollable, we often ignore this reality as feelings of certainty and predictability make us feel safe in this world.

Some might feel fine during these uncertain times and might even be grateful for the slow pace of life; you might feel this time is a great opportunity to relax and reconnect with loved ones.

Or you might be someone who is having a difficult time. These moments can re-trigger past traumas and attack our psychological vulnerabilities. The sense of isolation can make time difficult to manage. Instead of having fun with your family, navigating relationships might become complicated.

Some Common Psychological Reactions:

⇒ Poor sleep, difficulty in focusing, difficulty managing emotions, low mood, numbness, irritability, frustration, confusion, paranoia, and nervousness about the future.

⇒ It is important to remember that everyone experiences and copes with stress differently.

⇒ When faced with difficulties, we are often taught to find solutions outside ourselves, for example, going out to meet friends, going for a run, etc. While these are great ways to deal with difficult circumstances, due to the current situation, these strategies are not present.

If you are having a difficult time, these coping skills might help maintain your psychological well-being.

Coping Skills

1) Establish a Routine:

● No matter how much we hate our routine life, it is these everyday rhythms and their predictability that make our body and mind feel safe. COVID-19 and quarantines have disrupted these very rhythms of life. This can leave you feeling directionless in trying to figure out how to fill the hours of the day.

o Plan out your week; you do not have to force your old routine. Remember, these are novel circumstances, and they allow you to create your own new routine which nurtures you.

o Break up the day to stave off monotony. Keep plans short-term. Only plan today and the next few days. Don’t look into the unknown future: it is not in your control like the future never is – that is the most normal thing in these abnormal times.

o Dialogue is key: If you are a student, it’s important to have a dialogue around schedule, rules, and expectations. Many young students feel that their families have difficulty in providing and respecting schedules. Families must decide

schedules as a unit, thereby reducing conflict. As a student and young adult, it’s important to take responsibility that makes you feel competent but that should not compromise with your academic life. Help your family in understanding that balance and forming realistic expectations.

o Short term goals: Instead of trying to finish and pay attention to all your academic tasks at once. Try to start with the easiest and shortest goal and increase the difficulty and duration of the task gradually. This will help in feeling competent, and dealing with feelings of procrastination.

Rituals: Anything that we do every day is a ritual.

o For example, the morning cup of coffee is a ritual, or the thoughts that you have while walking back home are all rituals that create a sense of familiarity and groundedness for us.

o Creating a ritual gives us a sense of safety and predictability. Think of your beloved rituals taken away and bring them back. Let go of unhelpful rituals and create room for new ones. Maybe watch an old movie a day with the family?

o New structures are important too: It is essential to create new structures and habits that give you a sense of agency and efficacy.

2) Sleep Disturbance:

For sleep disturbance, maintain sleep hygiene

a. Making sure you go to bed at a consistent time

b. Avoid caffeine intake after 5.30 pm

c. Following a sleep ritual (reading a book, drinking hot water, anything that can help you follow routine)

d. Avoid using a phone or laptop in bed.

3) Exercise and Dancing:

o Remember, exercise is not only for a size zero figure but has a profound impact on your mental health.

o Even fifteen minutes of exercise a day releases endorphins and serotonin that uplifts your spirits. It’s also a great way to help combat the sense of boredom that can come from being stuck inside day after day.

o Start with ten minutes a day and increase gradually. Don’t have harsh expectations. Start slow.

o If you hate exercising alone, plan to have video exercise or dance sessions with friends.

4) Reducing Screen time:

● Constant online engagement can increase feelings of disembodiment and disconnection.

● It’s important that we take regular breaks, walk after forty-five minutes

● Engage in activities that allow us to remain connected with the outside world. For example, standing on your balcony.

● If working from home or taking online classes, prefer to work on your laptop instead of a mobile phone. Reduce your mobile screen time.

5) Stay Informed, but Not Overwhelmed:

● Rather than spend your time watching cable news, focus on getting helpful information from trusted sources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization(WHO), state and local health departments, and your doctor.

● Limit your TV time and disengage with things that put you in a state of threat. The situation is not under our control, so the best rule is to access information that makes us feel safe. For example, News regarding research trial vaccines.

● Keep distance from friends or family members who are prone to sharing panic-inducing posts.

6) Breathing Exercises:

● The thought of sitting with our mental commentary can feel overwhelming. It is important to not push our minds to be silent; treat your thoughts as clouds that come and go.

● Not getting attached or overwhelmed by them but letting them pass will help you have a friendly relationship with them, and they will appear less threatening.

● Even five minutes of conscious breathing exercise can allow us to relax.

● When you breathe out,you release all of the tensions inside, and when you breathe in, you inhale the nurturance from outside.

● Remember, breathing is about expansion and contraction, so we can allow this activity to help us get in expanding our inner selves: kindness, peace, love, faith, healing.

● Helpful resources: Alan Wallace, Thich Nhat Hanh, Dr. Russ Harris

7) Finding a New Hobby:

● Following a creative pursuit gives you something to work towards each day.

● It can even induce feelings of competence, mastery, agency, and a sense of purpose in the face of lack of control.

For example: Cookingis not just an ordeal, but a means to nurture ourselves.

● Cooking engages multiple senses, it can be a form of mindfulness. The focus and rhythm of chopping or stirring can help soothe anxiety.

⇒ You can even use cooking as a pro-social endeavor. If the state of our nation’s struggling poor disheartens you, you can cook extra to feed the essential workers around you (for example: guards, milkmen). Helping is another way to regain a sense of control and competence.

8) Expressing Emotions:

● We are often taught to block emotions, or they are considered abnormal.

● Our society has a tendency to pathologize normal feelings such as sadness and worry. Remember when you block pain, you also block joy and the capacity to experience all feelings. It’s healthier to acknowledge our complicated feelings. complicated feelings allow us to feel the pain of self and others, and it is only when we can handle both that we can be compassionate to the suffering of the world.

● Again, you might feel nothing or joy or boredom or just simply frustrated – remember YOU DON’T HAVE TO FEEL GOOD OR BAD ABOUT THIS.

● For others, the rise of the death toll might lead to grief. We might also feel grief for the planned future. Grief is a normal emotion at this time, and it is Okay to grieve!

● Open yourselves to trusted others and allow yourself and others to be vulnerable. Reassure each other that you are supported. Be empathetic to each other: This is new for all of us, so it’s important to be kind to each other.

● Remember, when we are hoarding our groceries, hoarding our emotions, hoarding our resources, we are continuing the old ways that brought us here.

9) Finding new ways to connect with family:

● In our families, intimacy, emotions, and affection can take different forms. Even when families are complex, they do also make us feel safe.

● Many families find it difficult to have honest conversations and deep dialogue.

● This crisis can be a moment to rebuild your relationship with your family.

● Playing old games (carom, ludo, charades)

● Having conversations after dinner is essential to build and maintain closeness.

● You can talk about: 1) each person’s favorite vacation, 2) their lasting regret, 3) their secret adventure, 4) what they are proud of in self, and others 5) what they appreciate or dislike about each other etc. Even simple questions can help in building and rekindling bonds, allowing us to connect with family safely.

10) Interconnected nature of self with the world:

● It might feel daunting to realize that we are deeply interconnected with each other and the planet we live on. The current crisis is a reminder that our health and well-being depend on each other. The earth balances our existence, and it is a good moment to hear the call of the earth and adopt practices that help our planet. Within a few days, we all are witnessing the earth rejuvenating and the ways our current economic system has made us indifferent to the pain of the others. Thus, breathe in the air from your balcony, hear the birds, and be amazed at the stars and keep it as a memory to remind ourselves that we are gifted with a beautiful planet, and we are responsible for its healing.

Optics Around The World

Modern evolution would not occur in the absence of light, and light from our sun plays a vibrant part in our day-to-day survival. It has revolutionized medicine, opened international communication via the Internet, and stays to be essential to link economic and political aspects of the universal civilization. Now, Optics is everywhere around the world; in consumer electronics (barcode scanners at supermarkets), communications (Internet), health (eye surgery, medical apparatuses), manufacturing trade (laser splitting and machining), defense and security (infrared camera, distant detecting), entertainment (holography, laser shows), etc.

You would have been realized attractive and good-looking colors in soap films or patches of oil buoyant on the uppermost layer of water. Moreover, the colors get changed when you watch it from different angles. Did you ever try to find out the reason? In scientific language, this takes place due to the phenomenon of interference. Colors append loveliness to our homes, towns, and lives. Apart from colors, lights such as Sunlight, Moonlight, and Starlight are also adding prettiness and wonderment to our EARTH. The features of the waves and photons can be used to discover the universe, relieve diseases, and also to resolve criminalities. Scientists and Knowledge experts have been studying light for more than a century.

The colors of the rainbow are only a small portion of the complete light wave range, called the electromagnetic spectrum. Optics travels an extensive variability of wavelengths, starting from gamma rays to ending radio-waves, with the inclusion of x-rays, ultra-violet and infrared light. How come light- and light-based skills influence our life daily around the world? Scientists, engineers, and experts are carrying out cutting edge research, which is very close to the field of optics. The science of light is also dynamically educated in classrooms and museums where instructors and educationalists share their desire for this field to young people and the general public.

To grasp the importance of optics, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) had declared the year 2015 as the International Year of Light (IYL). The 21st century will depend as much on Optics as the 20th century depended on electronics. The submissions of optics extend over various sectors: from optical data communications to imaging, lighting, and displays, from the manufacturing sector to life sciences, health care, security, and safety. Optical fibers are the heart of an optical communication structure that turns as the transmission channel carrying the light beam from one place the other, and the light beam (through the optical fiber) takes place because of the phenomenon of total internal reflection.

Laser light has many imperative applications of optics such as: (i) Laser is used in printers (Laser printers, 3D printers) (ii) Laser beams are highly intense and are used for cutting, drilling holes, welding of materials(iii) Lasers are used most successfully in eye surgery, treatment of dental decay, skin diseases and in cosmetics (iv) Lasers are used as bar code scanners in the library and in shopping malls (v)The Laser beam is used in the recording of intensity as well as holograms.  Therefore, we can say that optics is everywhere and had touched every part of human life.

ENACTUS SOCIETY

Our senses towards the underprivileged are curious, our heart reaches out to those in need, and we aspire to make sure that our existence becomes a reason for someone’s smile today. We got your back when your days are bad; we are Enactus. We strive for lighting up the darkest corners of our society because we believe that nothing is impossible.

Enactus is an international non-profit organization that brings together student, academic and business leaders who are committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. Guided by academic advisors and business experts, we, the student leaders of Enactus, create and implement community empowerment projects around the globe.

We empower people to transform opportunities into real, sustainable progress for themselves and their communities. There is an immense power when a group of people with similar interests get together to work towards the same goals, it's magical when you are striving together for the same change you want to see in this world. We at Enactus NCU believe in becoming that change we want to see, hardships might change our plans and ideas along the way, but they won't change our goals because when you're working on something you are passionate about you do not have to be pushed, the vision pulls you.

At Enactus, The NorthCap University, Gurgaon, we aim to partake in projects that can help communities around us in the best ways possible and try to pave the road for their progress. Our society is full of capable people, some intelligently use the right colors and brushes to paint their canvas. In contrast, there are millions of others who have the colors but are unable to find their canvas. Providing them with this canvas is what defines our nature of work.

"We're not in it for the income, we're in it for the outcome."  We believe investing in students who take entrepreneurial action for others that create a better world for us all. We not only help the unprivileged people to transform their lives but also teach the students to stand out of the crowd and make them learn to create opportunities with their limited resources.

We have done various projects like Innayat, Sahayta, Ehsaas, Kumhaar, and Aarogya. All of them aiming for different goals and creating a better social environment.

PROJECT KUMHAAR: This project, still in action, has helped the depleting essence of pottery in India by giving the kumhaars a chance to spin their wheel again and make their livelihood out of the lost Indian heritage.

PROJECT INAAYAT: It aims at building pencils out of newspapers. Using waste newspapers as the primary raw material, we present pencils that minimize the felling of trees for wood. Not only does it contribute to the protection of the environment, but it also aims at employing the disabled people, hence providing them with their regular incomes.

PROJECT EHSAAS: Enactus NCU’s latest project focuses on providing stable employment to gardeners. It aims to ensure that they can have a proper means of livelihood. There are numerous benefits of shifting to organic food. The project aims to promote the concept of organic farming and organic plants and help the gardeners at the same time. The gardeners shall be responsible for planting organic goods in households. The project also focuses on the source segregation of waste and the upliftment of waste collectors.

So it’s just not about underprivileged people it’s not about the environment; it’s about how we all can make a change in the world as a whole and make a change in someone's life or just help them decrease their hardships and bring a smile on their faces.
