Pandemic Situation: Indian Economy at halt!

We have witnessed a tough situation in this pandemic, 2020. Starting from total lockdown for days to trying to live a normal life in this strange situation of crashing economy, crashing lives, crashing livelihoods, and so on. Never had we seen a situation where, trains, flights and other public facilities were totally shut. Congested places like the metropolitan cities of India were totally vacant. Schools, workplaces and manufacturing plants are still not functioning at their fullest capacities. Though, we at NCU are doing everything to guide our students, be it guidance in education or to reduce the stress level in such situation. We are battling a worldwide pandemic, which even the most sophisticated, most advanced countries are finding hard to beat.

The lockdown is legitimized. The Covid-19 corona virus, which has developed exponentially, was slowed down in China with the assistance of comparable lockdowns. No big surprise large parts of Europe and the US have followed a similar model to stop the spread of infection. For this, our BA (H) Economics students have conducted study on this. Our syllabus includes all the latest topics including effect of corona virus on various economies. The following is the conclusion of the study conducted by our BA (H) Economics students.

After the great depression of 1930s where the global economy has faced a very critical situation is now facing the pandemic that has put all the economic activities at halt across the world. The precipitous deterioration in economic activities because of this lockdown is unanticipated in the history of India. The great economist Keynes gave the concept of “trade business cycle” after the great depression of 1930s. In which he explained that the four stage of trade cycle is considered to measure the growth rate and real GDP. IMF has predicted the GDP growth as 1.9% and this shows the most horrible growth performance of our country after the liberalisation policy of 1991 in the current financial year. The reason being corona virus which has frightened the entire economy. Though, IMF in its most recent publication of the World Economy Report has positioned India as the swiftest mounting economy in 2020.

In India, the impact on prognostic sectors of the economy is harsher than that observed in 2008 crises. The country is now facing multiple challenges in terms of finance, health, foreign trade and much more. The banks have boosted the excess cash flow because of the demand-side jolts which has arisen due to lock down and the uncertainties because of this sudden lockdown. The financial sector also suffered huge shocks including stock market, liquidity catastrophes, etc as the liquidity was drained out from the international market and huge changes were made in the monetary policy of the country. Companies which hinge on global trade suffered acute tension. The international economic production is on deterioration and anticipating a gigantic slump in the complete economic and financial system of the country. This pandemic has knocked the economy which examined the mark to make our economy of “USD $5 Trillion with 7% of GDP by the year 2024”.

According to the World Bank most recent valuation, India is expected to grow 1.5 percent to 2.8 percent. Also, according to the projection of IMF, India is estimated to have a GDP growth of 1.9 percent in the current year. However, to accomplish the target of “USD $5 Trillion economy”, Indian Economy should grow at 9% per annum for five years, which is extremely tough to achieve given the current circumstances.

Perhaps this emergency will make us take up enormous changes — as we may have minimal opportunities in any case. We last implemented major economic changes in 1991, when we had a colossal monetary emergency. The 2020 corona virus is another gigantic emergency, which may lead us to the changes we need in the economy.

At School of Management, The NorthCap University, we teach each and every topic connecting with the real world so that the students get deeper knowledge and hands on experience while studying. Our program objective is to face the VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complex and Ambiguity) environment through teaching pedagogy. And we are doing the same practically and the objective is being achieved at The NorthCap University.

Placement Preparation Initiatives @CSE, NCU

The NorthCap University (NCU) is one of the premier universities in North India. NCU always stands committed for the students, right from the time of their admission till they join their dream companies. Placements play an important role for students by providing suitable opportunities to get them evaluated against industry requirements and enhance their skills for those scenarios. It also aids students in deciding their future directions and achieve career goals.

Computer Science (CSE) Department at the NorthCapUniversity has been supporting students by providing necessary guidance and resources for their pre-placement preparations right from their first year. The students are provided help to crack different interview rounds that include Aptitude Tests, Group Discussions, Technical Interviews, and Personal Interviews. Multiple sessions are organized to make students well versed with the above interview rounds and are guided with the best ways of presenting oneself during these.
The campus placement of students is also a matter of great concern for us at NCU. For this, we conduct Pre-Placement Interviews (PPI) for all pre-final year students, making them fully aware of the complete placement process for different organizations. The industry experts, of which many of them are NCU alumni from renowned companies, conduct face to face mock interviews with students. The students not only discuss their interests, requirements, and expectations but also get an experience to face an interview along with full dress rehearsal before placement drives begin. The feedback given by the industry experts helps students to identify their improvement points and work on those.

In order to enhance the employability of students, NCU has also tied up with Third Party Employability Assessment – ‘Aon CoCubes’. The students starting from their first year take a series of employability assessment tests. The assessment is carried out in various categories such as English Usage Test, Analytical Reasoning Test, Quantitative Ability Test, Written English Test, Coding, Computer Fundamentals, and department-specific Domain Tests. These tests improve their chances to crack the company’s written examination during the placement process. It also helps to generate employment for students with its empanelled companies. Many companies even hire based on the score of pre-assess test for final year students.

General proficiency (GP) classes are conducted on a weekly basis. In these classes, faculty facilitates students by providing material and links to help students to refresh their fundamental concepts of core subjects, especially those which have been taught in previous semesters. Students are also required to take mock aptitude test from well-known websites. These sessions, along with mock interviews, help students not only for campus placement but also help in cracking various competitive exams like CAT, XAT, GATE, etc. Additionally, sessions are delivered by our alumni for final year students before the recruitment process to help students to boost their confidence in the recruitment process.

Experienced faculties conduct placement assistance and several doubt clearing sessions at NCU before the placement drive. These sessions motivate students to revise fundamental concepts and practice questions from previous year company papers. The timely feedback was given by faculty, mentors, and departments to help students to inculcate knowledge and skill before placement process begins.

Swachhata Award 2019 for The NorthCap University, Gurugram from Govt. of India

Since its inception in 1996, TheNorthCap University, Gurugram (formerly ITM University) has focused on providing world-class teaching and state-of-the-art infrastructure to its students. As a part of this endeavor, the university has painstakingly maintained a clean and beautiful campus to ensure that its students can study in an environment that enhances learning and productivity.

The University’s commitment towards creating a culture of cleanliness has enabled it to participate in the Swachhata Rankings of Higher Education Institutions for the past few years. The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India began ranking and awarding educational institutions from 2017 onwards based on the cleanliness maintained on their campuses. This annual exercise is a part of the Government of India’s ‘Swachhata drive’, which aims to promote hygienic and ecologically responsible institutions by generating healthy competition amongst them.

The MHRD evaluates each participating University based on several parameters to ascertain whether the University follows hygienic and environmentally friendly practices. These parameters include the maintenance of cleanliness in and around the campus, effective waste management, cleanliness of toilets, disposal of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, water conservation, rainwater harvesting and standards of food preparation in canteens. 85% of the marks allotted to each participant are based on swachhta inside the campus, and the balance 15% on activities outside the campus.

Since the very first year that this award was instituted, the MHRD received as many as 975 entries from various Central, State and Private Deemed Universities/Institutions in the country. The extent of participation has only increased since then, especially since the scope of eligibility was widened to include smart campuses. In December 2019, The NorthCap University competed in a pool of over 3750 institutions, colleges and universities, and featured amongst the Top 5 UGC approved Universities in the country in the Non-Residential category.

NCU credits this achievement to the hard work of its gardeners and housekeepers - the ‘Karmayogis’, who are selflessly dedicated towards maintaining the University campus. Their efforts to keep the garden in its aesthetically vibrant form throughout the year have also been recognized by the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA). HUDA has consistently ranked the University gardens as the best amongst educational institutions in Gurugram for 18 years in succession. This is yet another illustration of the University’s commitment towards creating a clean and green environment for its students. NCU will continuously strive to maintain such high standards of cleanliness.

And it taught me to be a winner- The NorthCap University

College life is a curious topic of imagination for every school student, same went for me. I was a shy and introverted person, I just wanted to break that mold in my college life. After my boards, my priority was to get admission to a college which is esteemed in its field, near to my location and The NorthCap University was just that choice. I opted for Btech Computer Science with a specialization in data science and artificial intelligence.

My first day started with the induction classes, where we were made familiar with the wide range of opportunities that the varsity provides along with the rules and regulations which students must follow to maintain a sense of discipline on the campus.

In the first semester, I found it quite challenging to adapt to the new environment, which is quite natural as, in the transition from school to college, the whole atmosphere gets changed. It was mostly due to the project-based learning and the new teaching pedagogy followed by the university. But, after the minors, things changed and I got well-adapted to the project-based learning approach.

The university not only focuses on academics but also gives special emphasis on the overall development of a student. The campus houses various international societies and clubs, along with many facilities for various indoor and outdoor games. I explored some of them, which includes Enactus and IEEE. Speaking about Enactus, it is an NPO which promotes entrepreneurship as a part of its pilot project – “Sahayta”. We made various field visits, it was a new experience for me where we were directly interacting with the people on the ground. In addition to the benevolent outcomes, the smiles and thankful reviews made the whole process worth it.

I participated in an event by Techienest. I was the zonal winner and got an opportunity to represent the university in IIT Bombay- “Aavriti 2019”. I also participated in various hackathons and workshops. I participated in the EESL challenge in the second semester, and in Microsoft-incubate challenge in the third semester. I also got ample floor to harness my skills in extra-curricular activities. I am also a part of the “Vibings” society and frequently write articles. Recently I participated in a group discussion by “Spie-Macay” and won that contest. Currently, I am a part of a start-up which deals in renting costumes- “costumes360”.

The day I entered this campus, I made a lot of new friends, got a chance to interact with many people, from workshop guest speakers who were adept in their fields to corporates. In my friend circle, every person is quite adept in their skills and field. For instance, one of my friends has launched his game in collaboration with a studio, some of them are in app development, and serious gaming also. Not only that, but there are also three schools in a single campus namely, “School of Engineering”, “School of Management”, “School of Law”. This multidisciplinary exposure is something that contrasts a college and university. I am not just restricted to my field. I am able to interact with people from management and law backgrounds, a forum where we discuss various national and international issues, and the new developments in our respective fields. The shy and withdrawn kid from school has now become an assertive and pro-active person, all because of the opportunities that this university campus provides, and the nurturing environment for following a variety of interests. From just reading about projects in newspapers and magazines, he is now working on some real industry projects. I am currently in the second year and the journey still continues. I have a lot to learn but still, being from a non-computer science background in school, looking back at the whole journey feels amazing.

The NorthCap University Leads in Online Teaching-Learning Amidst COVID-19 Crisis

Realising its social responsibility and due to its concern about the well-being of its various stakeholders in the present-day unprecedented circumstances due to the spread of Covid-19, The NorthCap University proactively responded by playing its part in mitigating the spread of the virus by taking several measures. The University took immediate steps like disinfecting the campus regularly, promoting hygiene and encouraging social distancing etc. as advised by the Govt. and medical experts. Further, as directed by the Govt., the University decided to suspend all regular classes from 16th March, 2020 onwards.

The University understood the gravity of the situation because of this disruption, and as a progressive institution, was the first to take the initiative of keeping the students academically engaged by offering online classes. The University decided that all teaching-learning would be in virtual settings with immediate effect till 31st  March, 2020.

Moving from face-to-face classes in classroom settings to virtual instructions was very challenging for both the faculty and the students as everything had to be managed within a very short time frame. The entire university stepped up and joined hands in utilizing the present trying times to provide a satisfying online learning experience to students. Rigorous training sessions using webinars were conducted for all users to equip them with the expertise of working on one of the well-known professional online platform ‘Microsoft Teams’. Instructions and user manuals were shared with all users through several emails and audio/video messages. The technical & IT teams of the university worked round the clock to create virtual class groups and handle queries.

Right from the first day onwards, the live interactive classes are running online just like they were held on any regular working day according to laid down timetable. The students are being informed about all classes through a virtual calendar that has been created for this purpose. A reminder is also being sent to all students using WhatsApp class groups so that the students do not miss out on the scheduled classes.

The response of this remote learning from students has been phenomenal as the attendance of all classes is around 90%, which is at par with that of regular classes. All software-based labs are being conducted very effectively through virtual instructions. Further on, demonstration videos are being planned for hardware-based labs so that even they are also suitably engaged. Students are submitting time-bound assignments to teachers and receiving feedback.

“As a student, I am enjoying the learning experience and I believe no other option could have been better implemented. Students can openly ask questions and introverts are not introverts anymore. Teachers are using different tools to make the class more interactive”, feels Pranav Jain, a third year Computer Science and Engineering student.

The entire experience is emotionally and intellectually fulfilling for the faculty as they continue on this journey of imparting quality education to the students. There has been no shortage of support for each other both from the students and the staff as we navigate through these challenging times. Dr Kavita Khanna, Head, Department of Computer Science and Engineering said "We at NCU don’t just teach technology, we practice it as well, we use it to face the unforeseen challenges that are brought before us from time to time. We have once again proved to be the real digital natives and a proud technologically savvy organization by embracing the change smoothly. In this uncertain situation when organizations struggle to find solutions, we have successfully sailed through.”

This is what Animesh Das, a first year student at The NorthCap University had to say about online learning, “The lecture delivery by faculty, the doubt clearing sessions and assignment submission is smooth, which is where I would like to say that the classroom comes to my home. The classes are also recorded on a daily basis so that we can revisit them in case we miss out on something. The process of online learning during this period of quarantine is helping us maintain our learning curve and hence when the university resumes we won't lag behind in the academic activities of the year.”

According to the experts, the impact of the deadly coronavirus is likely to reverberate across global higher education long after the outbreak is eventually brought under control. At NCU we strongly feel that going online is a very good alternative considering our experience of this smooth glide from face-to-face learning to online-only learning.
